Your Liposuction Procedure

During liposuction, you will be placed under general anesthesia. Your surgeon will make small incisions of about ¼ inches in inconspicuous areas of the body and connect a thin, hollow tube called a cannula to a suction machine. Your surgeon manipulates the cannula to remove fat and sculpt a more desirable shape.

The length of the procedure varies depending on the desired level of contouring. Most liposuction procedures take 1 to 2 hours, while full body contouring may require 3+ hours.

What Does Liposuction Treat?

A highly versatile treatment, our expert surgeons target and reduce fat across multiple areas for a sculpted look. Here are some popular lipo options:

Liposuction for the Knees

Knee liposuction enhances the appearance of the knees, creating a smooth taper from thighs to ankles. These areas are challenging to contour naturally due to their structure, but modern liposuction techniques can help.

Using small incisions near the Achilles tendon and knees, our surgeons expertly insert a thin cannula to remove stubborn fat deposits, sculpting sleek, contoured legs. Patients are fitted with medical compression stockings for 2 weeks post-surgery.

Liposuction for the Arms

Shapely, toned arms can enhance your confidence when wearing sleeveless tops and dresses. While diet and exercise often help, stubborn fat, weight fluctuations, or aging may cause arms to appear bulky or flabby, a condition referred to as “bat wings.” Arm liposuction offers a solution to restore a slimmer, more sculpted look.

During arm liposuction, your surgeon makes small incisions in the armpit and elbow and uses a thin cannula to remove excess fat, sculpting the arms to the desired shape. If sagging skin is present, you may need arm lift surgery (brachioplasty) for firmer results.

Liposuction for the Hips, Waist, Thighs and Buttocks

Stubborn fat in the hips (love handles), waist (belly pooch), and thighs (saddlebags) often resist diet and exercise, but liposuction can help. Unwanted fat is targeted and removed through small incisions, and our surgeons sculpt balanced, natural-looking contours. The buttocks can also be reshaped carefully to avoid sagging and maintain firmness.

Our surgeons are also known for achieving exceptional results with double-chin and neck liposuction. They use precise techniques to remove fat from the back (bra fat) and other targeted areas of the body.

Advanced Liposuction Techniques

Esteemed among Houston’s top liposuction doctors, our surgeons recognize that different treatment areas require different approaches. Therefore, we offer a variety of liposuction techniques to help you achieve optimal results:

Tumescent Technique

The tumescent technique for liposuction is still the most commonly used method for achieving desired results in contouring areas such as the waist, hips, thighs and buttocks. This technique works by injecting controlled amounts of a special fluid under the skin. The fluid causes the fat to swell for easier, safer removal, resulting in minimal bruising. After injecting the fluid, your surgeon gently moves a cannula back and forth to create thousands of tiny tunnels where the fat has been removed. After surgery, the tiny tunnels gradually collapse under the pressure of a compression garment. The tissue continues to contract within the tunnel, creating a slimmer appearance.

Ultrasonic Technique

Ultrasonic-assisted liposuction (UAL) is an advanced technique often paired with tumescent liposuction. UAL uses ultrasonic energy to liquefy fat cells, making them easier to remove with less tissue trauma. This approach minimizes blood loss, reduces bruising, and promotes better skin retraction.

A consultation with one of our board-certified surgeons is the best way to determine the optimal approach for your body sculpting needs.

Your Liposuction Recovery

Liposuction recovery varies depending on the extent of your procedure. However, here’s a general overview of what to expect after your procedure:

Immediately After Surgery:

  • Return home to prioritize rest and healing
  • Wear a compression garment at all times
  • Swelling and bruising peak
  • Take pain medications as directed by your surgeon

1 to 2 weeks:

  • Swelling and bruising begin to diminish
  • Return to work and other nonstrenuous activities
  • Refrain from vigorous exercise and activities

4 to 6 weeks:

  • Resume regular workouts and activities
  • Swelling and bruising continue to subside

6 to 12 Months:

  • Swelling fully subsides
  • You can confidently show off your sleek physique

After liposuction, our ACPS physicians may offer a private visit to your home by one of our plastic surgery nurses trained to assist in your recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is liposuction permanent?

Liposuction results are considered permanent if you maintain a stable weight and practice healthy lifestyle habits. Future weight fluctuations can interfere with your stunning results.

Is liposuction safe?

Liposuction is a safe procedure when performed by an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon who follows all safety guidelines. However, as with any surgical procedure, there is some risk involved. While rare, potential risks associated with liposuction include infection, excessive bleeding, scarring, and nerve damage.

Is liposuction painful?

Liposuction is a minimally invasive procedure, and most patients report only mild discomfort after treatment. Your plastic surgeon may provide you with pain medication to manage any discomfort.

How much weight do you lose with liposuction?

While you may drop some pounds after liposuction, it’s essential to understand that lipo is a body contouring procedure—not a weight loss surgery. Its primary goal is targeting and removing localized fat pockets for sleeker, balanced body contours.

Does liposuction improve loose skin?

In many cases, liposuction alone obtains your desired aesthetic improvements. However, if loose skin and unwanted fat are both present, our surgeons may recommend a surgical procedure to remove the excess, sagging skin, such as a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), thigh lift, and/or lower body lift or various nonsurgical skin tightening treatments.
