What Is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation, or augmentation mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure that enhances the size, shape, and symmetry of the breasts using high-quality saline or silicone breast implants.

Key benefits of breast augmentation include:

  • Enhanced breast size and shape
  • Fuller cleavage
  • Symmetrical breasts
  • More balanced body contours and proportions
  • Increased self-confidence

Breast augmentation is especially common among women concerned about deflated breasts after life events such as breastfeeding, weight loss, or aging. In such cases, our surgeons typically recommend pairing breast augmentation with a breast lift for a perkier, more youthful-looking breast position and appearance. These breast procedures are also a popular component of mommy makeover surgery, which may also include breast reduction.

Your Breast Augmentation Procedure

During breast augmentation, our plastic surgeons make an incision either around the areola, in the breast crease, or in the armpit. Next, they create a pocket for the implant. Our breast surgery experts typically recommend placing the implants beneath the chest muscle for the best aesthetic result, giving the breasts a gentler slope and a natural teardrop shape.

Once the surgeon has placed the implants into the breast pocket, they will close the incisions. Then, they will dress the area and put you into a soft, supportive surgical bra.

Breast augmentation is performed as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia and takes approximately one to two hours to complete.

Your Breast Implant Options

There are many different breast implants on the market. Most women seek breast implants that appear naturally youthful and complement their body proportions. Understanding that breast implant selection is a significant, highly personal decision, our experienced, caring surgeons guide you through the following options:

  • Implant Material (saline or silicone)
  • Implant Shape (round or teardrop)
  • Implant Profile (low, medium, or high)
  • Implant Placement (subglandular or submuscular)

Silicone vs. Saline Breast Implants

There are two primary types of breast implants available—saline and silicone. Saline implants are filled with sterile salt water, while silicone implants are filled with silicone gel.

Silicone-filled breast implants are a popular choice because they have a natural feel that is comparable to breast tissue. They typically produce a more natural appearance than saline breast implants, particularly around the edges, for patients with a thinner build.

Despite the trend toward silicone implants, our surgeons also offer saline implants. In contrast to silicone breast implants, which are pre-filled with a cohesive silicone gel, saline implants are filled with sterile saline after being placed inside the breast pockets.

Next-Generation Breast Implants

As a result of improvements made to breast implants, the newest generation of FDA-approved implants is not only more authentic in look and feel but also more durable in construction. In addition to proudly offering Allergan Natrelle®, Sientra®, and Mentor® breast implants at our Houston locations, we offer advanced Motiva® implants that offer enhanced natural movement, feel, and appearance.

While our patients appreciate the benefits of the latest advancements in breast implant technology, the greatest reward for most is the newfound satisfaction and confidence they feel when they see their stunning, enhanced silhouette in the mirror.

Your Breast Augmentation Recovery

Recovery from breast augmentation varies, but most patients should expect to encounter these general milestones during the healing process:

Immediately After Surgery:

  • Return home to prioritize rest and healing
  • Take pain medications as directed by your surgeon
  • Wear a soft, stretchy sports bra to support healing

1 to 2 weeks:

  • Soreness, swelling and bruising peak 3 to 5 days post-op
  • Return to nonstrenuous work and activities
  • Sleep on your back to protect your incisions and implants

4 to 6 weeks:

  • Swelling subsides significantly
  • Resume regular exercise and heavier lifting

3 to 6 Months:

  • Implants continue to soften and “drop” into their final position
  • Scars gradually flatten and fade

6 to 12 Months:

  • Final results are visible, and scars continue to fade

As part of our exclusive ACPS home health care program, patients who live within 30 miles of our offices may receive a visit from one of our plastic surgery nurses. The nurse will provide personal recovery assistance, including changing surgical dressings, assisting you with medication, and updating your surgeon on your recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should breast implants be replaced?

Though breast implants can be long-lasting for many women, some women choose to exchange their implants for aesthetic reasons, such as a desire for a different size or implant filling. However, unless you’re experiencing breast hardening or other potential issues that require revision, there is no requirement to replace your implants.

Like most medical devices, implants are not designed to last a lifetime. Ideally, patients should visit their surgeon annually for monitoring. Because we prioritize your safety and satisfaction,  we include your annual follow-up exams in your ACPS provider’s surgical fees.

Is breast augmentation safe?

Like any surgery, breast augmentation has potential risks and short-term complications, including infection, bleeding, anesthesia reactions, and scarring. However, with a qualified plastic surgeon and proper care, breast augmentation is a safe procedure with minimal risks and a high success rate.

Our surgeons also discuss rare but potential long-term breast implant risks and complications, including capsular contracture and breast implant illness (BII). Rest assured, our team prioritizes your safety during each stage of your breast augmentation journey.

Does breast augmentation leave visible scars?

Like other cosmetic procedures, breast implant surgery requires incisions that may cause scarring. However, our skilled surgeons use advanced techniques that minimize scarring and produce exceptional outcomes. A bra or swimsuit easily conceals the incisions. Our providers also share effective scar treatments and products.

Will breast implants affect breastfeeding?

While breast implants should not have any significant impact on breastfeeding, it’s possible that the incisions could interfere with the milk ducts or glands. If you are considering breast implants and are planning to breastfeed in the future, be sure to discuss your concerns with your ACPS breast surgeon.

Can breast implants increase the risk of breast cancer?

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, there is no scientific evidence to suggest that breast implants increase the risk of breast cancer. However, it’s still essential to follow proper breast cancer screening guidelines.

Is breast augmentation right for me?

The decision to undergo breast augmentation is a personal one that you should make after careful consideration and discussion with a qualified plastic surgeon. While breast augmentation can enhance your appearance and boost your confidence, it’s important to have realistic expectations and a thorough understanding of the procedure.
