Breast Reduction in Houston

Our board-certified plastic surgeons perform breast reduction, also called reduction mammoplasty, to reduce breast size, alleviate physical discomfort, and create more balanced body proportions. It also involves repositioning the nipple and often reducing the areola for natural-looking results that align with the new breast size.

Are You a Good Candidate for a Breast Reduction?

Ideal candidates for breast reduction surgery should be in good overall health, have realistic expectations about the procedure and its results, and be at a stable and healthy BMI. You should also quit smoking and nicotine products at least 3 weeks before and after your surgery.

Our experienced surgeons recommend the breasts be fully developed before seeking surgery. However, if large breasts cause severe discomfort or health concerns, the procedure may be appropriate for younger patients. Patients should postpone breast reduction surgery if planning to breastfeed in the future.

Your Breast Reduction Procedure

Breast reduction surgery begins with you being placed under general anesthesia to ensure your comfort throughout the procedure. Your surgeon typically makes an anchor-shaped incision that encircles the areola, runs vertically down the underside of the breast, and then horizontally along the breast crease.

Through these incisions, your surgeon removes excess breast tissue and fat and repositions the nipple and areola to a higher, more balanced position. In many cases, the surgeon will reduce enlarged areolae. They then tighten the remaining skin and meticulously close the incisions.

The procedure typically takes about 2 to 4 hours to complete. While many patients return home the same day, some stay overnight in the hospital for observation.

Recovery: What To Expect After Breast Reduction

While recovery after breast reduction varies per patient, here’s a general overview of what you can expect throughout the healing process:

Right After Surgery

  • Take pain medications as directed and closely adhere to your surgeon’s post-op protocol
  • Swelling and bruising are normal and to be expected
  • Only remove your surgical bra to shower (see your surgeon’s post-op instructions)
  • Sleep on your back with your upper body elevated to avoid putting pressure on your incisions

1 to 2 Weeks

  • Return to work in 1 to 2 weeks, depending on your comfort level and job demands
  • Continue wearing a soft, supportive sports-type bra for several weeks as swelling and bruising resolve

4 to 6 Weeks

  • Avoid strenuous activity and heavy lifting for 4 to 6 weeks
  • Swelling subsides significantly by this point
  • Begin wearing “normal” but supportive bras

While all patients heal at a unique rate, they usually achieve full results within a few months. Scars can take a year or longer to fade, but scar treatments recommended by your ACPS surgeon can accelerate healing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will insurance pay for breast reduction?

Breast reduction is often performed to correct a medical problem and may be covered by health insurance. For health insurance to cover the procedure, it must be deemed medically necessary rather than purely cosmetic. Coverage criteria vary by insurance provider, but common requirements include documentation of chronic pain, skin issues, and failed conservative treatments like physical therapy.

How big do your breasts need to be to get a reduction?

There is no size requirement for breast reduction. As with any elective surgical procedure, it depends on your body proportions and personal preferences. However, if you’re hoping to have your procedure covered by insurance, your carrier may have a minimum tissue removal requirement for breast reduction surgery.

Is breast reduction surgery permanent?

The results of breast reduction are long-lasting. While the removed breast tissue won’t regenerate, aging or weight and hormone fluctuations may cause the breasts to enlarge over time. Maintaining a stable weight and healthy lifestyle can prolong your results.

Is breast reduction painful?

You’ll be under general anesthesia, so the surgery itself isn’t painful. You may experience discomfort, such as swelling and bruising, for a few weeks after surgery. Our providers share their recommendations to help you manage your comfort.

Can you breastfeed after a breast reduction?

While breastfeeding may be possible after surgery, our ACPS surgeons recommend postponing your breast reduction for women planning to breastfeed. Studies show that some women may have difficulty breastfeeding when a significant amount of breast tissue is removed beneath the nipple and areola. We encourage you to discuss any future breastfeeding plans with your surgeon during your consultation.
