For many women, a Mommy Makeover addresses multiple post-pregnancy concerns through a personalized combination of procedures. While every treatment plan is different, the process generally includes three key phases: preparation, surgery, and recovery. Understanding what to expect during each stage can help you feel informed and prepared throughout your surgical journey.

What a Mommy Makeover Can Include

One of the benefits of a Mommy Makeover is that it can be customized to address your unique anatomy and concerns. No two procedures are exactly alike because every patient has different goals and surgical needs.

During your consultation, your surgeon will evaluate your anatomy, discuss your concerns, and recommend a personalized treatment plan based on the procedures that will best help you achieve your desired results.

Options commonly included are:

Your surgeon may recommend one procedure or a combination of procedures depending on your anatomy, priorities, and overall treatment goals.

Are You a Good Candidate?

A Mommy Makeover may be a good option for women who want to address changes that can occur after pregnancy and childbirth. Ideal candidates are generally in good overall health, at a stable weight, have completed breastfeeding, and are finished having children.

Because a Mommy Makeover combines multiple procedures, good overall health and realistic expectations are important. Patients who do not smoke, or who are willing to stop smoking well before surgery, typically experience smoother healing and lower risks of complications.

There is no single “best” age for a Mommy Makeover. Instead, candidacy is based on your overall health, anatomy, lifestyle, and surgical goals. During your consultation, your surgeon will evaluate these factors and recommend a treatment plan that is appropriate for your individual needs.

Preparing for Your Mommy Makeover

Preparing for surgery ahead of time can help support a smoother recovery. Before your procedure, your surgeon will provide detailed pre-operative instructions based on your treatment plan and medical history.

If you smoke, you will be asked to stop well before surgery, typically at least 4 to 6 weeks beforehand. Smoking affects circulation, delays healing, and can increase the risk of complications.

Your surgeon will also review your current medications and supplements. Certain medications, including aspirin, ibuprofen, and some herbal supplements, may increase the risk of bleeding and should be discontinued before surgery as directed.

Setting Up a Recovery Space

Preparing your home before surgery can make the first few days of recovery more comfortable and manageable. Before your procedure, consider the following:

  • Arrange a comfortable recovery space with supportive pillows and frequently used items within easy reach.
  • Set out loose, comfortable clothing that is easy to put on and remove.
  • Arrange help with childcare and household responsibilities during the early stages of recovery.
  • Prepare nutritious meals and stay hydrated to support healing.

Taking time to prepare your recovery space in advance allows you to focus on healing and recovery during the first few days after surgery.

“From the start of my journey to almost the end, it’s been a comforting experience. My room was very comforting, and the nurses were very nice in making sure that I was comfortable throughout my stay. I am looking forward to the final results. I would totally recommend doctor Patronella for any surgical needs.:)”

The Day of Surgery

Before surgery, your surgeon will review your treatment plan and answer any final questions. Your care team will then prepare you for anesthesia. Most Mommy Makeover procedures are performed under general anesthesia to keep you comfortable throughout surgery.

The length of surgery depends on the combination of procedures being performed but typically ranges from 2 to 6 hours. After surgery, you’ll be closely monitored by your recovery team before being discharged with detailed post-operative instructions.

What To Expect Post-Op

Your surgeon and care team will provide detailed instructions and ongoing guidance throughout your recovery. Swelling and bruising are expected during the early stages of healing, and your surgeon may prescribe pain medication to help keep you comfortable. Compression garments are also commonly recommended to help reduce swelling and support the healing process. Be sure to wear them as directed.

Short, gentle walks are encouraged to promote circulation during recovery, but strenuous activity should be avoided until your surgeon clears you to resume it. Recovery timelines vary depending on the procedures performed. Many patients return to nonstrenuous activities within 1 to 2 weeks, while those who undergo a tummy tuck with muscle repair may require 2 to 4 weeks before resuming more regular activities.

As swelling continues to resolve over the following months, your results will gradually become more apparent. While healing timelines vary, most patients continue to see improvement as tissues settle and their final results develop.
