1. Day of Surgery

After your rhinoplasty, you’ll wake up with a nasal splint in place to protect and support your nose’s new shape. Swelling will begin immediately, and you may notice bruising around your eyes within hours. Mild to moderate discomfort is common, but any pain is usually managed well with prescribed medication.

2. Days 1–3: Peak Swelling & Bruising

Swelling typically peaks within the first 48 to 72 hours and is usually accompanied by visible bruising under the eyes. It’s important to rest with your head elevated and avoid bending or lifting. Cold therapy can help with tenderness and reduce the intensity of swelling, making these first few days more comfortable.

3. Days 4–7: Early Relief

Bruising often begins to fade, though some yellowing may occur as part of the normal healing process. The swelling gradually lessens, especially with diligent rhinoplasty aftercare. Most patients feel more comfortable resuming light daily activities, but you should still avoid strenuous movement. Your plastic surgeon will guide you through safe nasal hygiene and incision care during this stage.

4. Week 1: Splint Removal

Your splint is removed between days 5 and 7 after your procedure, revealing the first glimpse of your refined nose shape. We will also remove the blue stitches near the nostrils, while the clear, dissolvable stitches inside the nose will remain. These usually become less bothersome around 5 to 8 weeks.

Keep in mind that swelling—especially at the tip—remains significant, so your results will continue to evolve. Some bruising and minor asymmetry are still expected at this point.

If you’re curious about how surgical techniques influence recovery, our overview of open vs. closed rhinoplasty explains why some approaches may affect swelling duration more than others.

5. Weeks 2–3: Back to Routine (With Care)

Bruising after rhinoplasty is usually minimal or gone by the 2-week mark, allowing most patients to return to work or social activities. You can reintroduce light exercise like walking but should postpone any activities that risk impact to the nose.

Residual swelling continues to decrease, though the bridge will appear more defined before the tip does. You’ll notice early changes in nasal shape, although your results will still need time to finalize.

6. Months 1–3: Subtle Refinement

You’ll see noticeable improvements in nasal contour, and breathing (if functional corrections were made) often feels clearer. Residual tip swelling is still common but will gradually improve. Continue following the rhinoplasty recovery tips from your ACPS surgeon, such as protecting the nose from accidental bumps, avoiding heavy glasses, and wearing sunscreen to protect the skin as it heals. With your surgeon’s guidance, you may also resume rigorous or high-impact exercise.

7. Months 6–12: Final Definition

By 6 months, most of the swelling has dissipated, and your nasal tip will start refining into its new shape. For many patients, final results are visible by around 12 months, although subtle changes—especially in the tip—may continue for 12 to 18 months, particularly for those with thicker skin.

Your final results should look natural and harmonious with your facial features.
