A smooth, flat abdomen and a narrow waist are an attractive feature of a fit, youthful body. Pregnancy and weight gain can alter these characteristics greatly due to stretching that occurs to the skin and the inner connective tissues (fascia) and muscles of the abdominal region. The weakening of this inner structure, along with poor skin elasticity, and excess skin and fat, often leaves the abdomen and waist flabbier, thicker, and protruding in appearance.

Though diet and exercise can provide some improvement, they cannot correct the protruding that occurs as a result of a weakening of the abdomen’s underlying connective tissue and muscular structure. This must be repaired surgically to restore a flat look to the tummy.

Tummy Tuck Procedure

In a tummy tuck procedure, ACPS surgeons resculpt the abdominal region to restore a flat, toned appearance to this area and a narrower contour line to the waist. They begin by making a horizontal insision just below the bikini line. Through this incision, they repair the weakenened facsia and muscles by tightening them with permanent sutures.

After trimming away excess skin and repositioning the belly button, sutures or skin adhesived are used to close the incisions. After the 2-5 hour tummy tuck procedure, your surgeon may recommend an overnight stay in one of the recovery suites at our private ACPS SurgiCentre. Our overnight guests are carefully monitored and cared for by our well-trained staff of registered nurses.

Tummy Tuck Recovery

A small, thin tube may be temporarily placed under the skin to drain excess fluids, and you will be fitted with a compression garment to minimize swelling and support your abdomen during the healing process.

In the days following your surgery, you will be encouraged to take short walks to promote blood circulation. Most patients are able to return to normal activities within 1-2 weeks, and resume exercise in 6-8 weeks. Though it is common to experience swelling after tummy tuck surgery, much of this will diminish over a period of 2-3 months. The procedure leaves a scar which will fade over 7-12 months.
