Facial Resurfacing
New laser technology has enabled the plastic surgeon to remove areas of damaged or wrinkled skin, layer by layer. The laser works by using a beam of laser energy to vaporize the upper layers of damaged skin at controlled levels of penetration. As new cells form during the healing process, a smoother, tighter younger-looking skin appears. The laser is most commonly used to reduce fine lines, especially around the eyes and mouth.
This procedure may be performed on an outpatient basis using local anesthesia with some medication to help you feel relaxed during the procedure. For more extensive resurfacing, your surgeon may recommend general anesthesia. You are likely to experience some mild swelling and discomfort afterwards, but this can be controlled with ice compresses, ointments, and medications.
There will be some crusting of the skin, but this will most likely be gone in about 10 days. Your skin will be pink to red over the next 6 to 8 weeks, but you may conceal this with makeup in about 2 weeks. Some pinkness will remain for up to 3 months.
